The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) Scotland has made the plea for greater support to be provided for SME builders, or risk exacerbating the country’s housing crisis.
Regardless of the party in power, the next Scottish government is being urged to implement several measures that would alleviate this pressure.
This includes setting an all tenure housing target of 25,000 homes per year, delivering SME-focused development management and investing in local planning services.

Additionally, FMB Scotland wants the Scottish government to work with the Scottish National Investment Bank to develop more equitable funding and finance for small housebuilders.
“The next Scottish Government must do more to support SME housebuilders who play a particularly strong role in developing new homes needed in rural locations and on the redevelopment of brownfield sites,” said FMB Scotland director Gordon Nelson.
“We ignore SME housebuilders at our peril.
“This sector is more than willing to play its part but we must get supportive policies in place and put them into practice.”
